Signature Scrolls

Our Signature Scroll™ is used to commemorate a special event such as an anniversary, a time capsule dedication, a memorial event, a wedding, a reception, a retirement, a merger, a fund-raiser, a reunion, a political petition, or just any special sign-in! All ceremonial scrolls include one archival black pen, acid-free buffered tissue & festive ribbon. The paper we use is PermaDur®, a 20-lb. bond paper that is 25% cotton and guaranteed to be acid-free, lignin-free and buffered. Properly stored, this paper will last up to 300 years or more. Buffered, acid-free tissue is provided along with your scroll.

Signature Scroll Development

Future Packaging & Preservation can't take credit for the idea of using a scroll for gathering signatures, of course. But when we had to de-acidify 6 scrolls that Whittier, CA had in their time 1987 Centennial Time Capsule, we thought we could make them better. Whittier had used a very heavy paper that's called parchment, but when we tested it, it tested acidic. And, they had to glue or tape the papers together in order to get the length they wanted. Also, the glue they used for the wooden ends was unknown. If you do these yourself, be sure to use pH neutral glue for your ends, and if the ends are wood, seal them first before adhering the paper. Use only acid-free, lignin-free permanent paper that has a pH reading of more than 7.5. We use Permalife® paper, rated to last for 300+ years, but any permanent paper would be fine to use if it meets the ANSI standard for paper permanence. Thanks to Whittier for a fine idea, and what a wonderful response they got from their community! Their time capsule contains SIX scrolls of about six feet long each. Service organizations, such as the Boy Scouts, assisted in taking the scrolls around the community to get signatures. Everyone joined in the fun.

Simple Scrolls

Simple ScrollSimple Scrolls have the same seamless paper but no ends. Scrolls are wrapped in acid-free tissue and tied with a ribbon. As an option you can add a nice complement to either Signature Scroll by ordering a soft enclosure. This pouch helps protect the scroll from dirt, scratches and rips, especially as it’s handed around frequently for signatures.

Ideas For Use & Getting Folks Directly Involved

Our Signature Scrolls have been used as guest registers at special occasions. They have been used as huge greeting cards. But most impressive use made of them has been when used for involvement of each individual in his community's future. In fact, one of the most popular headings for the scroll is “Our Messages to the Future” In this way, signers are encouraged to say something along with their name (especially if you have the first person to sign be the leader and start off that way). Many organizations have been successful in using the Scroll as a fund-raising activity. Suggested donations may be $1 or $2 per column inch or suggested area of the scroll.

Another favorite phrase used on our scrolls is the following: "We honor the past, celebrate the present, and embrace the future” (from the Seattle Times' Signature Scroll, 1992). Also very popular: "Our Messages to the Future: The ABC Company, December 31, 2000." The calligraphy shouldn’t make the scroll look like a banner. The lettering is only 1 to 2 inches tall. It doesn't discourage signatures, but rather, it invites them.

How do you find a calligrapher? See  http://www.acatemp.org/calligraphers.htm for ideas, and http://www.cynscribe.com/ . Let us know your calligrapher’s name and address information, and we’ll be glad to forward the scroll. If you are a calligrapher, send us your information and perhaps we can work together in the future.
